What is Holistic Psychotherapy?

At its core, holistic therapy approaches mental health difficulties as a manifestation of deeper issues in a person’s life. These could be past traumas, unhealthy relationships, or disconnection between the authentic self and our assumed roles. By addressing these underlying factors, holistic therapy aims to create lasting change and better holistic mental health.

What to Expect from Holistic Psychotherapy?

Therapists using this approach recognize the impact of physical health, lifestyle, and even spirituality on our mental functioning. They use a broader range of techniques than “talk” therapy and tailor it to each person’s needs.

Mind-Body Connection

Holistic psychotherapy may include practices such as mindfulness, meditation, yoga, and breathwork. These practices help individuals become more attuned to their bodily sensations and emotions, facilitating a deeper sense of self-awareness and healing. According to a 2017 study, mindfulness-based interventions have been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression (Hofmann & Gómez, 2017).

Integrative Strategies

This combines techniques from other therapies. For example, CBT, psychodynamic, humanistic, and somatic experiences might be used in holistic therapy. Research in the Journal of Psychological Services shows integrative therapy techniques can improve outcomes and advance healing practices (Stevenson, et al., 2023).

Nutrition and Lifestyle

Holistic therapists will often explore nutrition, exercise, sleep, and other lifestyle factors that affect mental health. Encouraging healthy habits and routines can support overall well-being and complement the therapeutic process. A 2019 study found that lifestyle changes such as diet can be key to managing depression and anxiety (Firth, et al., 2019).
